Are there any side effects associated with consuming yerba mate?Updated 5 days ago

Yerba mate is naturally caffeinated, just like coffee and tea. Each can of Mateina contains 120 mg of caffeine. Too much caffeine, or even a normal amount if you’re sensitive to it, can cause side effects.

How much is too much?

For most healthy adults, the FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects. That total includes every source: coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks and pre-workout. We recommend no more than 3 cans of Mateina per day.

Tolerance varies widely. Body weight, medications, certain health conditions and your usual caffeine habits all play a part, so some people notice effects from a single can.

Mateina isn’t recommended for children or for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, and it shouldn’t be mixed with alcohol. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or an anxiety disorder, or you take prescription medication, talk with your doctor before drinking caffeinated beverages.

Signs you’ve had too much

  • Jitters or shakiness
  • A racing or pounding heart
  • Anxiety or restlessness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach or nausea

What to do if you feel any of these

Stop drinking Mateina and avoid other caffeine for the rest of the day. Drink some water and give your body time to process the caffeine.

Seek medical help right away if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, a heartbeat that feels irregular or won’t slow down, fainting or confusion. If your symptoms don’t ease or anything worries you, contact your doctor.

If you try Mateina again, start with less and have it earlier in the day, ideally with food.
